Where We Work
Linn County is home ground, and Cedar Rapids is the county seat. From here we run west into Benton County, southeast into Cedar County, east into Jones County, and south into Johnson County. The Cedar River splits this city and the ground rises away from it on both sides, so the wall work starts about two blocks from the water and keeps going uphill.
Inside Cedar Rapids the older hill neighborhoods carry the most walls. Wellington Heights sits close to downtown on gently sloping ground with small front yards. Bever Park, northeast of downtown, holds larger houses on bigger lots near the parkland. Both have walls that predate anybody's memory of who built them.
The ring towns are not one kind of ground. Uptown Marion is the historic core, and Terrace Park sits on a knoll that early residents picked because it stood above everything around it. Mount Vernon is built on a paha, a loess ridge running about a mile long and standing well above the farmland beside it, and Lisbon sits on the same landform belt. Hiawatha and Robins were platted flat and new. Palo sits on the river west of town.
