Cedar Rapids Retaining Walls is a locally owned wall contractor working sloped lots in and around Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We repair walls that have moved, rebuild walls that are past repair, build new block, timber, boulder, and stone walls, correct drainage behind sound walls, terrace slopes into usable yard, and handle long runs for HOA boards and commercial property managers. What we do differently is boring and it is the whole job. We open the back of the wall. Clean angular stone goes in behind the block from the base up, filter fabric keeps the native soil out of that stone, and a perforated pipe carries water out to daylight. On anything tall enough to need it, geogrid runs between the courses and back into the hill, sized by wall height rather than by habit. A wall built without those things is block sitting on dirt holding a wet hillside.

Cedar Rapids gives a wall two loads instead of one. The clay and loess here swell when they take on water and shrink when they dry. Then winter crosses the freezing line and comes back over a hundred times, and every cycle freezes the water sitting in that clay. The wall gets pushed a little further out and never comes back. Rain is the load people expect. Frost is the one that actually walks a wall down the hill.

We also say no. A wall that has rotated hard cannot be pushed upright, so we quote a rebuild instead of a fix that will not hold. A wall above roughly four feet needs a permit and an engineer's design, and we say that before you get attached to a price. A bowing basement wall is a foundation contractor's work, not ours. Telling you that costs us a job now and then. It beats charging you for something that will fail again.
